Look at the bigger picture for internet regulation

As an industry – and a society – we are in danger of narrowing our focus too far when it comes to regulation, writes ISBA’s director general Phil Smith for Campaign this week.

Is the regulation of Facebook a defining issue of our times? Phil Smith believes, in the light of Gideon Spanier’s recent column in Campaign, as an industry – and, indeed, as a society – I think we are in danger of narrowing our focus too far.

“How to regulate the internet is a defining issue. But it is also a big issue,” Phil writes. “It concerns the defence of free speech, no less. And if we only take one perspective, or we focus our attention too tightly on one business or a single platform, we are likely to push other issues and problems into the margins.”
